Shakespeare has been an influence in literature for centuries; in Stoppard pays homage to Willy Shakes in Arcadia in one of the 1809 scenes. So what does the saying "the barge she sat in" means? WELL: this refers to the play Antony and Cleopatra; Act 1 Scene 2. In this scene it opens with Cleopatra's servants trying to find out about their futures along with introducing the Egyptian Queen Cleopatra. While describing the GRAND entrance for Queen Cleopatra it's elegant, it's regal, her barge (which is a ship on nile) is huge letting the Romans and peasants and everyone in audience knows that she is a woman in charge. As Beyonce once said "Who run the world? Girls." Queen Cleopatra would surely agree, she did in fact run the world, as long as you forget about the Romans destroying the city of Alexander and the library, but it's fine!
